This has been true for some time.

crw-r-----  2 root  operator  116, 0x00010002 Mar 21 02:40 /dev/ad0

vmware is working fine for me. Did you remove and reinstall the vmware
port when you upgraded the machine ?

I have a plain disk set to /dev/hda;

                                                  /usr/compat/linux/dev/hda
