Interesting question.

On our Pyramid systems, the tool that installs a partitioning table
into the PDF of a SCSI device is called "dkpart". It has an option
that can load the partition table into the running kernel without
touching the drive, specifically for read-only devices like CD-ROMs
and Magneto Optical devices.

Seems like a useful feature.
