I was really concerned when I upgraded to 4.0 because all three of my
systems at home are on UDMA66 ide's. The motherboard's don't support
UDMA66 but I know the next one will. The concern at that point was
whether I needed the / part of my system on a slower drive and all of
the mount links on the faster drives.

Things like you are experiencing make me nervous about not using scsi.
