It should try to upgrade direct dependencies. Maybe someone who works on pk=
g(8)
knows why it didn't happen.

I can't help. Out of date dependencies when using binary packages are not
supported at all: few libs if any support *forward* ABI compatibility. With
ports (from source) there's a leeway (some can be downgraded) but no
handholding if build breaks.
