If I'm writing cross-platform scripts, then I'll want some way for the 
script to know which commands have machine-readable output, and which 
ones do not.  And unless we're going to implement machine-readable 
output in all base-system commands at once, then we're also going to 
have the issue that a command which does not do command-readable output 
today will suddenly start doing it tomorrow.
