That is the MSP queue running daemon, not the MTA.

Which script were you using (./ doesn't give the path)?  `make stop`
in /etc/mail/ will work as should `/etc/rc.sendmail stop`.

The MSP queue running daemon PID file is:

/var/spool/clientmqueue/sm-client.pid
