You're lucky. The actual recommended way to go is,

  # make buildworld
  # make buildkernel KERNEL=MYKERNEL
  # make installkernel KERNEL=MYKERNEL
  # shutdown -r now
  [in single user mode]
  # make installworld
  # mergmaster
  # reboot

You can probably get away without going into single-user mode and
rebooting in the middle. See /usr/src/UPDATING for details.
