And another question on the side: you *have* build a recent config(8)
before trying to compile the new kernel, right? That is:

If you are compiling the kernel using the 'make buildkernel from /usr/src,
you should have done a 'make buildworld' first.

If you are compiling a standalone kernel (running config(8) by hand),
you should have done either a 'make world' or a 'make installworld'
after a 'buildworld' on these very sources (not the ones before updating).

If you are using 'make world'.. it has probably taken care of config(8),
but the buildworld/buildkernel combination is much preferred for 4.1
and onwards.

If all of this is too unclear for you, that's probably because your
question was a bit too unclear for us. At the very least you might
have included the exact error message; the steps you have taken to
build the kernel would also help; the FreeBSD version that you are
trying to update from would not hurt, either; the exact kernel config
would be an added bonus ;)

G'luck,
Peter
