But I'm not. I'm using a 2940UW with a few average drives on a p166. But
speed did vary wildly sometimes anyways.

That's exactly the reason I suggested the smallish packages. It makes it
easier to get your system working, so you can then attempt to download
only what you need.  Who knows someone may have a use for a gcc less
system.
