8.0 almost certainly isn't going to go away any time soon - there are
still a number of ports that are going to be difficult to port, since
they use various features that have been removed and/or replaced in 8.2

Have you mentioned the XF86Setup/8.2 breakage to the XFree folks?
Sounds like something they'd want to fix before releasing their 4.0
