If that is the case then I guess using the fixit stage may be the answer.
Of course after doing 

man boot0cfg

If he's allergic to man pages, then going to the archives and searching 
for "How can I reinstall MBR loader" will help. There's kinda a tutorial
there. He  may also just search for boot0cfg -Bv
