PHK had me
    dd if=/dev/afd0 of=/dev/null
with no media in the drive.  I get "dd: /dev/afd0: Device busy", which is
what the problem is.  Some where in /sys/dev/ata is an EBUSY that should
be ENXIO.

If you can instrument at least atapi-all.c and atapi-fd.c and help track
this down it would be most helpful.
