$HOME/.profile is only being sucked in by /bin/sh when starting.  So
it's apparent that this would become a useless file for any login
`shell' != /bin/sh (or bash, or ksh).

You most likely didn't notice it's non-existing effect on Linux since
the default PATH might be different anyway.
