If you want the system to start stuff (before you log in),
/usr/local/etc/rc.d is there directory where you put stuff to execute
(shell scripts calling actual programgs are best). To execute stuff when
you log in, .profile, .login, or .cshrc, depending on which shell you use.
There are other directories besides /usr/local/etc/rc.d; they are listed
near the top of /etc/rc.conf (local_startup, I believe).
