What do you mean? The "thomas@mydomain.com"
(substituting "mydomain" with my *actual* domain, of
course) isnt't valid username? That is the domain that
I am using to check my mail when I use their "webmail"
interface through a browser. I called them today just
to confirm that it is the correct login for doing what
I am trying to do and they said it was. You lost me
there...can you explain this to me, please?

AFAIK I have not received any mail yet...I made a
mistake a couple of posts ago..I received a STATUS of
2 and assumed it was the number of messages. This was
actually an error (as one of you pointed out to me).
That problem was solved by changing the polling server
to the one I orignally had, which is now at least
attempting to connect to the server, but I am stuck on
this username and password problem.

thomas@www:/home/thomas> echo $MAIL
/var/mail/thomas

(**I have checked that directory after I fetch, just
in case it didn't tell me on screen that the messages
were received, but there has never been anything in
that directory)

thomas@www:/home/thomas> ls -al `echo $MAIL`
-rw------- 1 thomas thomas 0 Mar 8 04:01
/var/mail/thomas

Let me know if this tells you anything, 'cuz I'm still
stuck....
