Brussels (pte, Mar 13, 2003 11:12) - The European Information Society
Technologies Prize (IST Prize) will be awarded for the most innovative
information technology projects this year in the competition's ninth
   round.

The competition is organized by the European Council of Applied Sciences
and Engineering (Euro-CASE) http://www.euro-case.org under the auspices
   of the EU Commission.

Up to 700,000 euros in prize money will be awarded for ready-to-market
concepts and research results with a high degree of innovation.

German teams interested in competing can attend an information session
organized by FAST GmbH http://www.fast.de in Munich on 10 April.

exist. Finished products should not have gone on the market before 1 June
   2002.

International experts rate the product along criteria such as technical
design, degree of innovation and competitive potential. The product=92s
potential to create new jobs by staking out new markets or leading to the
founding of new companies is also considered. A bonus point is given for
products contributing to the acceptance of information technology in
   society.

The competition is open to companies, universities and professional
colleges, as well as other organizations in Europe and Israel. The prizes
include 20 so-called Winner Prizes of 5,000 euros each. Three entries can

   Philips cutting 1,600 jobs
Weak semiconductor branch to become profitable again

   Amsterdam (pte, Mar 13, 2003 12:10) -
Netherlands based electronics group Philips http://www.philips.com is
cutting 1,600 jobs in its chip production division, the company announced
today. The personnel reduction will affect jobs in the USA and Europe.

Philips also intends to shut down several of its semiconductor factories
and cut research spending in this area to 960m euros (minus 200m euros).
The goal of these measures is to reduce the deficit in the company=92s
semiconductor business and return to profits in the fourth quarter of
   2003.

Philips Semiconductors http://www.semiconductors.philips.com is the third
largest chip producer in Europe after Infineon and STMicro. The division
   employs 34,000 people.

"Uncertainty due to the political situation has also caused uncertainty
among consumers. They are therefore spending less on information
technology and tend to be more reserved in buying consumer electronics
equipment,=94 said Scott McGregor, CEO of Philips chip production. "Last
year=92s growth prognoses belong in the realm of the imagination,=94 he =
said.

Specifically, Philips intends to close two chip factories in the USA and
reduce the capacity of other factories by up to 20 per cent. The
restructuring is expected to cause non-recurring costs of up to 270m
euros. The depreciation is to be distributed in results over the next
three quarters. Philips expects yearly savings of up to 250m euros from
   this move.

Last year Philips posted a loss of 537m euros in its semiconductor
business. Philips Semiconductors brings in 25 per cent of group turnover.
The group reported a total loss of 3.206m euros in 2002. (end)

British chiropractors warn of SMS injuries
Quick typing on small keys may cause harm over time

   London (pte, Mar 13, 2003 12:32) - British chiropractors
http://www.itepcs.net have warned that hastily typing SMS messages on
tiny mobile number pads can increase the risk of injury to the hands and
   fingers.

About 45 million SMS messages are sent in Great Britain each day. About
ten million are written in Switzerland and eight million in Austria,
while Germans send as many as 80 million a day.

"Repeatedly pressing the tiny keys over a long period of time increases
the dangers of sprains and injuries over time,=94 said Mathew Bennett of
the British Chiropractic Association http://www.chiropractic-uk.co.uk ,
as quoted in the Sun. His colleague Tim Hutchful says developments in
mobile phone technology are responsible for the increased risk. As mobile
phones get smaller and smaller, the keys are moved closer together.
Smaller keys are harder to activate and can therefore cause more strain
   in the user's hand.

British mobile operater Virgin Mobile http://www.virginmobile.com has
already reacted to the chiropractors=92 concerns by publishing an exerci=
se
routine on its website. The special movements are designed to improve
circulation in the hands and fingers, and prevent injuries that can be
sustained from rapid SMS-typing. The routine is also designed to help
those who spend a lot of time playing computer games.

The exercises can be tried at

   Williams shows interest in Renault
F1 insiders say French have powerful new engine

   Boulogne-Billancourt (pte, Mar 13, 2003 12:48) - British F1 outfit
Williams http://www.williamsf1.co.uk may team up with former engine
suppliers Renault http://www.renault.com again as rumours grow that the
French motor experts have developed a powerful new engine, insiders have
   claimed.

Team boss Frank Williams is believed to have held secret talks with
Renault boss Patrick Faure in Paris after hearing about a new 900HP
engine the company is getting ready to unveil.

Williams are still waiting for a decision from current engine partners
BMW on a possible extension of their existing cooperation beyond 2004.

The new engine, which is expected to replace the current 830HP engines in
team drivers Jarno Trulli and Fernando Alonso's cars later this season,
is a massive draw for the British outfit, insiders have said.

Renault has already won four drivers' world championships partnering
Williams: Nigel Mansell in 1992, Alain Prost in 1993, Damon Hill in 1996
   and Jacques Villeneuve in 1997.

The news comes just days after it was revealed Mercedes had built a
monster 930HP engine to use later this season. Mercedes insiders said the
engine was "the most powerful engine in F1 today". (end)

German TV accused of illegal porn ads
Sex hotline commercials may violate national laws

   Saarbrucken (pte, Mar 13, 2003 13:31) - Nearly all of Germany=92s private
television channels are suspected of violating national laws on
advertising and pornography. This was announced by German media directors
and committee heads after a two-day conference of the German working
group for regional media institutions http://www.alm.de in Saarbrucken.

The media experts say a report submitted by the German coordination
centre for youth protection, programming, media competence and civil
media (GSJP) has confirmed suspicions that German TV channels violate
advertising laws with television spots for sex hotlines.

"It seems certain TV programmers can only earn ratings in ways that are
socially unacceptable,=94 said conference head Norbert Schneider,
commenting on the results of the GSJP study.

The media authorities are investigating ads for telephone sex, as well as
   so-called "sex clips=94 shown on RTL, RTL2, Vox, Pro Sieben, Sat.1, Kabe=
l1,
DSF, Neun Live, Onyx TV and Tele 5. The subscription channels Premiere
and Beate Uhse are also suspected of ignoring laws.

According to Schneider, the range of claims against the TV stations
includes violation of the law against advertising for pornography, the
ban on pornography, and advertising for prostitution.

"Phone sex ads and sex clips are broadcast between a variety of
programmes for hours on end. This constitutes broad programming that a
nightly television consumer can hardly avoid,=94 said Schneider. Further
investigations and talks with the TV stations will decide whether there
   will be licensing consequences. (end)
