That turns out to be exactly what the problem was. For some reason, I had
commented out the ATA entries in the kernel config file. I had noticed this,
but
repeated config-make-make installs hadn't had any effect. Your response told
me
that I was looking in the right area. It turns out that I had to do "config
-r" in
order to get the ATA code into the kernel. In any event, it works now,
thanks
a million!
