If you are going to run VPN with freebsd try one of
theese:

http://www.r4k.net/ipsec/ - IPSec port from OpenBSD to FreeBSD
http://www.skip-vpn.org/ - From SUN (In the ports)
http://www.kame.net/ - IPv6 and IPSec 

And the last option is to run ppp(tcp) over ssh.
