Why don't we just get rid of it altogether? I'm not sure
about the OpenBSD aproach of just the CVS tag, though,
but it could be trimmed down.

example from the games/bnetd port in OpenBSD:
# $OpenBSD: Makefile,v 1.5 1999/05/06 02:15:12 brad Exp $

DISTNAME=       bnetd-0.4.1
CATEGORIES=     games
MASTER_SITES=   http://www.bnetd.org/files/
