    man config.  e.g. using config -pg, I believe, will generate a kernel
    with profiling.  On -stable anyway.

    The system isn't actually doing anything wrong, it's just being
    inefficient somewhere so a dump doesn't really help.

    Is there any serious disk activity when the syncer is locked up for 
    that second or is it solely a cpu thing?
