phk, has anyone contacted you about the crash caused by this code?  The
gstreamer port can register a custom printf format if the functionality
is available.  Once this is registered, the xprintf code is in effect,
and this causes a crash with normal printf's in the same process.  I was
never able to reproduce so I asked some of the people that were to
provide you with a backtrace.
