I have
MYADDR:
add 0 0 HISADDR

as /etc/ppp/ppp.linkup.sample ships with.


So, you should be running "route add default <his end>".  

I'm not so sure though, I've never gotten ppp.linkup working.  I finally 
made a shell script to make the changes for me.
