How about staying on Long Island or in New Jersey? Public transport
into the city is excellent, and hotels will be much more reasonable.
If you rent a car, you should DEFINITELY fly into an airport in
another state, as New York rental rates are several times as high.
(They have mandatory no-fault insurance.)
