In terms of FreeBSD, it's a 486 or Pentium-class machine with 16mb or more
of RAM and lots of disk space.

Depends on what is meant by ``BSD''.  BSDi BSD/OS should work OK, as
should NetBSD and OpenBSD.   SunOS programs (which used to be based on
BSD) will need to be ported.
