I decided to try gdm, so I changed the line in /etc/tts from .../xdm to
.../gdm, and rebooted. Now I can't login to the X session, either as a
regular iser or root.

I'm getting messages on the console about no modules being loaded for
service gdm. This is on a fresh (this weekend) STABLE build.

What step have I overlooked?
