 Hi,

 some more information:

My kernel paniced while trying to create the directory
 "/var/tmp/instmp.XLZ9c1". I went to /var/tmp and did
 "rm -rf instmp*".

After that, portupgrade was fine, but I still get sporadic
panics when trying to create directories in /var under heavy
load. I tried with or without softupdates, doesn't make any
 difference.

 Jan-Oliver
