I haven't had the problem ever since FreeBSD 13.

I'm still using lightdm but have switched from the old character-mode conso=
le
(kern.vty=3Dsc, BIOS boot) to EFI and kern.vty=3Dvt. The result of this cha=
nge was
not only that ACPI S3 suspend/resume finally started working but also allow=
ed
switching back and forth between X11 and character VCs without video corrup=
tion
(I'm using the nvidia driver in case this makes any difference).

Either way, ck-list-sessions is correctly reporting the active/inactive sta=
te
of the X11 session at this point.
