The 2740 and 2742 are the same but the '42 has a floppy controller.
I'm running a 2840 (VLB) here...  

Just make sure you've got eisa in the config and device ahc0.
Check if some of your disks don't handle SCSI2 or disconnects
and check their setup in the Adaptec bios (enter Control-A).
What exactly are the reset messages.

Works great, my problem was I needed eisa even though this was a VLB
ISA machine. (This took me a while to figure out. Couldn't figure why
I needed EISA support with no EISA bus.)
