What you're probably wanting to do is much like the install floppy -- have
a compressed kernel + root filesystem.  For this, you'll have to peek
through the 'make release' mechanism available from the src/release
package.  

For something a bit simpler, check out handbook section 10.5.9.5 (?).
This explains how to make an emergency boot floppy, and you may be able to
apply that to your situation.
