Indeed. My dual PII-400 256MB with LVD-SCSI disks does make -j8 -DNOGAMES in ~50 minutes. Try upping the number of jobs until it slows down. In answer to the original question, I don't think that going to dual 600MHz processors is worth the money. If the money is buring a hole in your pocket, sure, but otherwise, nope.
