Setuid ( chmod 4755 /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86 ) did the trick.    This is the
3rd system which I recently installed X & kde2, yet the others were setup
just fine.  Go figure.

		sounds like your premissions are messed up. 

		try

		chmod 755 /usr/X11R6/bin/*
		chmod 4755 /usr/X11R6/bin/X*
