Removing the old sources is not necessary as far as I know.  I have
never removed them and have had no problems.

I have a 486 DX4 100MHz with 42 MB RAM and a standard IDE drive.  It
takes me about 24 hours to do the make buildworld portion and around
3-4 hours for the make buildkernel part.  The installs go pretty
quickly and it's mostly just file copies and/or moves.
