Try tar -xf <filename>

The 'f' specifies you are reading from a file rather than the tape
device.  See 'man tar'.

Hmm.. I use a DC21140 based card and it works fine.  (Pretty amazing
for a US$60 card)  Do you get any messages at boot up?
