I just use a hosts file and it works well (as long as you're not running a web server on port 80 of the localhost, of course). I use the one at http://winhelp2002.mvps.org/hosts.htm, with a nightly cron job to fetch, unzip and dos2unix it, then merge it with my (very small) 'real' hosts stub.
