Could you please install sg3_utils package?
And then run the following commands (after attaching the USB device):

sg_modes -p 63 -vvvvv /dev/pass2
sg_modes -p 63 -m 192 -vvvvv /dev/pass2
sg_modes -p 63 -6 -vvvvv /dev/pass2

It might be helpful to run the same commands (adjusted for the device name)=
 on
the host to see if VirtualBox causes any trouble (unlikely).
