I suggest to have a look at the other ports which already handle the amd64
case. There's a way to do it without the need for a new port.

That's strange. In this case try it the Microsoft way: de-/reinstall the rpm
port. Maybe you should delete the /var/db/rpm directory after deinstalling
the rpm port to make sure you're in a sane situation... this assumes you
don't have any other rpm based software installed anymore.

Since you've experimented alot I suggest to remove the /compat/linux
directory completely before you install the linux_base again.
