Just a few ideas, cannot comment on the viability (having not tried
either- I like pine):

1.  I think Star Office has a mail program.  You might want to investigate
    it.

2.  You might want to try /usr/ports/mail - there is a lot there
    (Mahogany comes to mind)
    
3. If you're that hooked on Outlook Express, you could investigate
   running it under WINE (windows emulation).
