Could you use something like:

	rootdevname = getenv("kern.rootdev.name");
#ifdef ROOTDEVNAME
	if (!rootdevname)
		rootdevname = ROOTDEVNAME;
#else
	if (!rootdevname)
		rootdevname = ... old guessing behaviour

so that the loader can unconditionally override the root device name?
I have this crazy plan to read /etc/fstab to try find the root device
before starting the kernel, which should make all this crap about
guessing it based on the disk label obsolete.
