Best keep www. prepended :

A decade or so back I noticed http://freebsd.org answered as well
as http://www.freebsd.org & so I started dropping the www, but
webmaster@ corrected me, pointing out some of the freebsd host[s]
answering the DNS A record for the cluster might then or in future
not be served by httpd.

( Similarly, I'm gradually restoring the www. prefix I previously
stripped off some of my own
http://www.berklix.com URLs, as I've realised there may be times
when I want browsers to access only the www DNS A rec. httpd
served subset of my berklix.com cluster (eg when I'm reconfiguring/
  upgrading one host etc) )

I believe though some browsers automatically prepend a www. [if original
URL first fails?] but some do not prepend www.

Cheers,
Julian
