 Problem solved.
 
 One of the three disks in use (brand new) had a very strange caching
 and therefore timing/performance behaviour during write operations.
 Write performance was 'oscillating' between 0 (zero) and maximum.
 
 Disk will be replaced. Sorry for the noise.
