I'm still very much of the opinion that stuff shouldn't have to be 
mentioned in the config file at all; that all that the config file 
specifies is what gets aggregated into the kernel object.

Then you just want a linker set of all the console-like devices, a 
pointer to the current console in the set, and a hint for initialising 
the pointer which can come in from the bootstrap.  The backdoor-style
minimal console functionality is more or less essential; I don't think 
we can escape this reality.
