Aha!  I found the problem, from your last message - I don't think I used
vipw, I was just straight vi-ing the password files.  After using that,
NIS appears to all work fine except for when I su to root, a whoami
returns '0', and when I vi things, it keeps complaining that UID 0 does
not exist.  Any ideas on that one?
