All of the other stuff you mentioned (BOOT_COMCONSOLE_SPEED, etc.) are all just to get the boot messages onto the serial console. If you have the above in /etc/ttys and either HUPped init(8) or booted with this /etc/ttys, first double check that the settings at the other end match up.
