as i said in a previous msg, this seems totally redundant. Running
`hostname` when rc starts will give you the same exact result --
it is uninitialized for non-bootp machine, and set to the hostname
by BOOTP if this is used.

I really hate redundant methods, because then you have to keep them
consistent all over the place.
