This probably didn't belong in hackers (I didn't tell him to send it here),
but the following probably do (relating to the same system):

I dropped by and looked the system over, and found that the problem wasn't
that he couldn't speak to the modem. Rather, it was that the modem is
already connected to his provider which is still running PPP from the
previous session (remember, he is on a leased line). Power-cycling the
modem make no difference; ping packets sent to his IP address still show up
as noise in the PPP term :) (There is a Linux pppd in the other end of it,
if that is of importance.)

However, both Linux pppd (he used to run Linux) and Trumpet Winsock is able
to force the other end to handshake and connect, even if it already think
it is connected. I was unable to get the standard PPP from boot.flp to
re-initiate that connection. Do anybody know how to force this? A way to
do this from the existing floppies are preferred, but if nescessary I can
patch PPP and vuild new boot floppies. (The long term solution, but I'd
like a short-term solution for now, as I want FreeBSD user penetration in
Norway.)

Constantly connected to his service provider, which run a patched dial-up
modems as leased line modem, and run a Linux box with pppd as their
connectivity. This box do NOT 'feel' a modem poweroff or recycle.
