I would have *expected* that to go to /usr/lib/compat/aout; that's
certainly where it is on my 3.1-R system(s).

That ought not be necessary.  (We load several 2.2-x-flavored programs
via NFS and run them on 3.x-flavored systems.)

As above:  the a.out-format libs go in compat/aout; the ELF ones don't.
