Also note that FreeBSD, by and large, does not have nearly as many incompatible changes to the device driver interface. Another Linux problem which is a non-problem in the FreeBSD world. As far as probing hardware is concerned, by and large, I've not needed to use anything but the GENERIC kernel for a long, long time now. The whole setting up of CD-RW devices as a pseudo-scsi device on Linux is a kludge.
