Oh dear, I just knew this was going to happen when I saw Bruce's message.

John, I don't think that Bruce quite meant to sound as harsh as he
did; he sometimes confuses "helpful" with "anally retentive" and I
think all of us have fired a few arrows at him one time or another for
sending us 2 page descriptions of a fix where the fix would have
occupied a quarter page. I think he was a computer science professor
in a past (or current) life and he can't help it - it's ingrained
behavior. ;-)

That said, I really do appreciate the fact that we have "a Bruce" on
our team since he's also been an important asset and sometimes it's
*good* to have someone who really keenly reviews things. It certainly
helps me to sleep better at night knowing that if someone ever does
commit a serious error, it's more than likely that Bruce will review
and catch it. You can't hardly *pay* for that kind of aggressive
review and if it's sometimes overly aggressive, it's far better to
simply say "Bruce has crossed the line on this one, I think I'll just
ignore it" rather than say or do anything which might cause Bruce to
check a little less thoroughly in the future. I truly appreciate the
feedback that I get from Bruce, and if he starts ragging me about
whitespace changes or something else that I consider beneath my
attention given all the other things I have on my TODO list, I just
smile and whap "delete" rather than flame Bruce for it. :-)
