Hmm...

What is the output of
# bsdlabel /dev/ad2s1
?

Usually you could edit the disklabel with
# bsdlabel -e /dev/ad2s1
You should leave slice "c" untouched and
make "a"
  start at sector 16
and
  as big as possible
