No, it's a PCI card.  It configures itself.  You're correct about it being
trash though -- it has no buffer space.  Yuck! :(

How far down is that?  Check the jumper settings on your CD.  Try moving
it onto the primary controller.  The black screen is a stick in finding
devices; try hitting ALT-F2 and see what you have there.

NIC:  Intel EtherExpress Pro/100B (or +)
CDROM:  A SCSI one.
